Cumbrian castle proudly flys new Westmorland Flag

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Augill Castle near Kirkby Stephen is flying the Westmorland Flag today in a bid to show its support to the traditional county of Westmorland.

With the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics just around the corner, the five-star castle believes there is no better time to feel patriotic.

Augill Castle owner Simon Bennett said: “With all the national buzz around the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee, we feel it’s as important as ever to express our support to the county. Thank you to the Historic Counties Trust for kindly sending us the flag which we hope will be used by other local organisations too.”

Recently registered by the Flag Institute, the Westmorland flag has been designed to represent the county’s two baronies – the barony of Kendal and the barony of Westmorland. The barony of Kendal is featured with the flag’s two red bars, stemming from the de Lancaster family, Barons of Kendal, which also featured predominantly in the arms of the former South Westmorland District Council. The barony of Westmorland is symbolised by the flag’s distinctive apple tree, stemming from the thirteenth-century seal of the Borough of Appleby.

Augill Castle offers award winning five-star bed and breakfast accommodation in Cumbria. Set in 15 acres of stunning private grounds and boasting decadent, individually designed rooms complete with turrets, towers and roaring fires, Augill has charm in abundance and promises a truly unforgettable family-friendly break.
