Set in a former Victorian cattle parlour, the Michelin Guide-recommended Bistro at the Distillery is a place where locals and tourists alike can enjoy everything from afternoon teas to three course suppers.


Alongside using locally-sourced meat and vegetables to create their dishes, Bistro at the Distillery also interweaves award-winning spirits from the Lakes Distillery with a number of dishes on the menu. Here are 5 of our favourite ideas to give your classic dishes at home a twist on the norm by throwing in a spirit of your choice.


1) Prawn Cocktail with “The ONE” Whisky Sauce

A classic starter is given a Cumbrian makeover with a delicious whisky sauce. The addition of ‘the water of life’ adds a kick to the sauce, making a tangy yet not overpowering change to the standard Marie Rose sauce.

2) The Lakes Gin-cured Trout

This fish dish, served with pickled cucumber, citrus fruits and crème fraiche, is a favourite at their cookery demos and makes a superb starter. Try this at home by adding the following mixture to a large fillet of trout; 100g sea salt, 100g caster sugar, ½ grated lemon zest and 100 ml The Lakes Gin. Wrap the trout in cling-film and refrigerate until lightly cured (best left for at least 9 hours).

3) “The ONE” Whisky Steak Sauce

Featuring at ‘Steak Club’ every Wednesday evening, this sauce is the perfect complement to all Cumbrian Fellbred steaks served, from sirloin to Fillet Mignon.

Why not give your steak dinner a decadent twist by trying it yourself? To make the sauce, you will need; 500g wild mushrooms, 2 large field mushrooms, 500ml veal stock, 100ml The ONE whisky, 200ml double cream, 15g Dijon mustard, 2 large chopped shallots, 50g unsalted butter and salt and pepper.

Cook the shallots and all mushrooms in butter, then add The ONE whisky and reduce by half. Add the veal stock and mustard and simmer for 10 minutes. Finally add the double cream, stirring well, and season with salt and pepper. Add more whisky at the end to taste!


4) Lemon Meringue Tart with The Lakes Gin Ice Cream

Satisfy your sweet tooth and love for gin at the same time with this delicious dessert. You can alternatively enjoy The Lakes Gin Ice Cream on its own; a bang-on trend sweet treat, it’s the grown-up version of vanilla!

5) The ONE and The Lakes Gin Truffles

The ideal way to finish off a meal – best enjoyed with a coffee! Also available to buy from the onsite retail shop to enjoy at home.
