With the summer holidays well under way, we thought we’d share our thoughts on some of the best family outings the Lake District has to offer this month, to help you plan your next trip! Or simply provide some light reading for those that actually have no intention of leaving the house.
So without further ado (and in no particular order)…
1. Lowther Show – 13th/14th August
The annual Lowther Show, with its own unique look showcases the very best of the Great British countryside. On offer is a fine array of country sports and displays, as well as quality exhibition stands, picnic areas and crafts fairs. There’s plenty to keep the whole gang occupied throughout the day making the Lowther Show the perfect family day out!
2. Appleby Summer Pudding – 20th August
A fruity, juicey, gooey, indulgent one-day festival for the whole family to enjoy, set in the unique and magical 12th Century Appleby Castle in the heart of Cumbria. Live bands, circus acts, face-painting and funfair are on the day’s agenda, as well as a delightful array of foodie treats, of course!
3. Solfest – 26th – 28th August
Why not head west and enjoy a fine weekend of live music and Cumbrian culture! Held on the beautiful Solway coastline just outside of Silloth. Soflest won the national ‘Family Festival of the year’ award’ in 2007 and has previously been headlined by acts such as Badly Drawn Boy, Supergrass and The Charlatans.
Set for national release on the 19th August, this feature film marks a proud moment for the County. Not only was Arthur Ransome’s original novel based on his time here in Cumbria, the 2016 film was shot in various locations across the county. We recommend a trip to Ambleside where you can watch the film at Zefferelli’s Cinema and enjoy local food and drink in the many bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of activities going in the Lakes to create your own Swallows and Amazons adventure, such as cruising on one of the filming locations – Derwentwater, courtesy of Keswick Launch.
5. Carlisle Pageant – 20th August
A 10 day pageant is soon to be rolling into the capital. Based in the city centre, the free event will be jam packed with family fun and festivities. On top of the various market stalls and street shows, there will be a Family Funday and puppet parade running from 11 am on the 20th, as well as an all-important Kidz Zone!
