With the opening of the newly renovated The Lamplighter Dining Rooms situated in the heart of Windermere, some of the team at Cumbria Tourism were keen experience the recent changes to this popular Lake District eatery.

HeraldLamplighter Dished recently by food critic Jay Rayner for its top-notch Sunday lunches, The Lamplighter has expanded its offering with a new lounge bar and outside south-facing terrace. This gives guests the opportunity to enjoy alfresco dining.

Greeted by co-owner James Tasker, who highlighted the unique key features of the renovation such as the newly appointed snug which can be used for private dining and the art deco, hand printed wallpaper which was shipped over from America and beautifully positioned in the bar and private dining area.

The team were treated to a variety of sharing platters consisting of a tasty trio of Cartmel valley smoked sausage, smoked trout and salmon accompanied by Cumbrae Oysters and cheddar and leek croquettes alongside smoked brie and hummus.

Enjoying a relaxed, friendly atmosphere as well as signature cocktails labelled Rhubarb & Custard which was curiously made with some ‘secret’ ingredients. The topic of conversation moved onto one of intrigue about the ‘Anty Gin’ on offer. A one-of-a-kind gin made with the ‘essence’ of 62 distilled red wood ants with a price tag of £25 per shot, making it one of the most expensive gins in the country. Not only expensive, it is also one of the rarest gins available with just a few hundred bottles in circulation, the team couldn’t resist requesting a whiff of this rare gem.

The night drew to a close and we were then on our way into the cool summer evening but not without being waved off by the delightful staff, leaving behind the warm ambience and characterful touches of this family owned establishment.
