Western Lakes – High Adventure Part Two
A couple of weeks ago Catherine Taylor (PR Assistant) talked about her experience on the High Adventure tour with Mountain Goat. Well here is the second part of the tour …
So now over to Catherine with her second instalment of the Western Lakes and the High Adventure tour.
After taking in the sights from the mountainous passes of Wrynose and Hardknott, the High Adventure Mountain Goat Tour of the Western Lake District dips into the valley to Dalegarth to the village of Boot, at the foot of England’s highest mountains, the Scafell Range; 3,209ft at their peak.
Home to the La’al Ratty, also known as Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. The railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England and this year celebrates 100 years of being a 15” gauge Railway.
The heritage steam engine takes you through the stunning sights of the western lakes, Ravenglass, the only coastal town in the Lake District National Park.
The open top or cosy closed carriages make the 40 minute, seven mile journey comfortable for everyone of all ages. One ticket allows on and off journeys all day so you can explore the surroundings yourself. Learn more about the Roman heritage in the area with a visit to Ravenglass Roman Bath House or take in the spectacular mountain pass views with a walk from Fisherground Halt station to Blea Tarn.
Half an hour walk from Ravenglass station is the historic Muncaster Castle. Built on roman foundations dating back to circa 79AD, the privately owned castle has been occupied by the Pennington Family since at least 1208. Nowadays, the castle and its grounds, including Himalayan gardens are open for the public to enjoy. With an Owl Centre with daily flying displays, Meadow Vole Maze and resident ghost Tom Fool there is much to see and do.
To make sure you see all the Western Lakes has to offer, Mountain Goat run daily tours. The High Adventure Tour showcases Hardknott and Wrynose Mountain passes, the Langdales, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Wastwater, and Muncaster Castle and Gardens on an all-day bus tour. The price of The High Adventure Tour is £40 per adult and includes a ticket on La’al Ratty Railway and Muncaster Castle Gardens.
